This is not what you asked---but whats wrong with system restore, that is
built in? Seems to me to be the best way, and it works.

What's the best way to backup the xp registry?

The built-in system restore is fine, when it works (programs,
accessories, system tools). You should also have a backup. Frequently
recommended here is erunt.zip, a 575K freeware utility.
