I run XP Pro. I just purchased and hooked up a MAXTOR 3100 (100GB) Ext HD
for backup purposes. When I run XP "Backup" the system stops with a message
that says there is basically insufficent space. Something about the fact
that if disk is formated as FAT32 the capacity is only 4 GB and therefore to
small.

I am totally in dark as to what all this means. Ed Bott's piece on Wndows
XP Backup does not discuss any such issues.

DO I need some sort of special format on Ext D? Is the MAXTOR the wrong
type of devise for XP backup process?

CAN SOMEONE ADVISE AND POINT ME TO MORE INFO IF THAT WOULD HELP.

THANKS for any help

Rob - you might try converting your external drive to the NTFS file system.

If the Maxtor drive is formatted FAT32 then there is a 4GB limit for the
file size. The manual for the drive would tell you if it was possible and
how to switch to NTFS. Not sure doing so would entirely fix the problem
with NTBackup in XP (it has its own set of quirks) but it would definitely
get you past the 4GB size limit.

Personally, I use an external Maxtor One Touch (250GB) for system images
with no problems. I've had this drive for a while now. Unfortunately,
beyond using the Maxtor CD, I'm having trouble remembering the details of
how I set it up. Sorry.

Sharon - Thanks for info. I used DOS cmd "convert" to reformat and all
worked well. Thanks again
