I have a new Toshiba Satellite computer with Vista Home Basic. I attempt to
back up my hard drive using the Backup/Restore Vista program. It begins
okay, but when it asks me to insert a DVD it says it needs to format the DVD,
which is okay.
But as soon as I click on Format, I get an error that says the DVD is "write
protected and cannot be formatted". They are new DVDs and I have tried
several different types. Any thoughts?? Thank you.

Your DVD player can probably write to CDs. Are you sure it can write to
DVDs? Also, can it write to the type of DVD media you are using (DVD
+R, -R, RW, DL)? And there is always the chance that the particular brand
or type of media is not recognized as writable media in your drive.
