Is there any way to backup the history folder in IE 7? I have things as
favourites but there have been several occasions when someone has said --
that website you went to last week .... it wasn't something I was interested
in so never bookmarked it and we weren't sure of the name of the site or
couldn't remember the content, except maybe a couple of tidbits from it.
When this started happening, I decided to keep a history of where I'd been
on the internet. I have WinXP Home.

It's a folder/s. Search your hard drive for history .

IE 5 used to have a folder called "History" with each day or week in a
subfolder something like this: "MSHist012005070420050711". In this folder
was an "index.dat" file.

Has this changed with IE 7?

I can find a folder called "History" in several places on C: drive, but
there is only a file in that folder called "index.dat" - there are no
subfolders labelled "MSHist .....".

This is for IE6 (Should be same for 7)
Instead of backing it up, increase the time to delete history.
Internet options > Increase "Days to keep history ...."

The history folder can be opened by(It is per-user folder) :
Type this in Start > RUn
"%userprofile%\Local settings\History" (Including quotes)

Alternatively, you can view the history folder in explorer > View > Explorer
bar > History
