Backup files and settings

Having recently bought a new PC I am trying to use the files and settings
transfer wizard in XP to create a DVD-RW however this method will only allow
me to use a floppy drive (too small), network (don't have) or and external or
internal drive (don't have).
Is there any way to save all this data to a DVD disc?

Thanks

You have to use DVD burning software. (Such as Nero.) WinXP doesn't support
DVD burning only CD-R (and not CD-RW).

By the way, C/DVD-RW is not a good idea for backup. For one thing, the disks
can only be read on a machine that has RW support, as I once discovered to
my embarrassment and cost. Depending on how big your back up files are, a
USB pen/pocket drive is a much better choice.

Do it in stages - eg save to the hard drive first and then to dvd.
and / or choose the "settings only" option and transfer the files over
separately, if it's too large to store on your hard drive.

I haven't lost my mind; I have a backup somewhere.

The reason I decided to write that, was mainly because "Matt"

I use a DVD-R disk for each backup with no problems, using Nero to burn the
disk. So at any time I can recall backups.
DVD-R disks are not expensive if bought as a "cake".

I have backed up on USB flash disks (I believe the same as pen/pocket
drive).

They are not very secure though - their portability for carrying round data
makes them very easy to steal).

Indeed I have been given a flashdisk at an interview to copy an exercise
that I had to carry out. On one occasion I walked out of the interview with
the disk - I could have downloaded other material on that same machine.

I used to have a Reader Writer (an add-on) but now I have a machine that can
write to CD's. I don't find the process at all straightforward. It seems to
me to be fraught with problems and it is not easy/possible to delete a file
once it has been copied.

The USB disk can be used just like the hard disk, whereas there is the CD
drive to contend with.

That all depends on what type they are. I use Light Scribe compatible ones
and the last time I purchased any, CD-R was approx $2.00 each in a cake.

Well, you do have an internal drive, or your computer wouldn't work.
The question is whether it has enough room to hold your backup.
Make the backup and then copy it to a CD or DVD. CD R is probably
ab better choice, but nothing wrong with R/W; cheaper in the long run.
