My laptop has got very sluggish and having failed to find any obvious cause
after thorough scans I'm thinking about a reinstall.
I have a couple of pristine Iomega Peerless 20GB disks but before backing up
my data to one of them are there any precautions I should take to ensure I'm
not transferring any problems? Or am I going to flush them away when my HDD
is reformatted and XP reinstalled.
What I'm asking is are there any folders which I should not backup?

You can use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to back up your data files
and settings, burn the file to a CD/DVD, format the laptop's drive, reinstall
XP, and the use the FSTW to return the files and settings. The reinstall all
of your applications.

You should not backup the Windows folder if it is likely to be infected by a
virus, spyware, have corruptions, etc. that updated scanners don't fix.

You have to have a clean installtion of XP, which means having to reinstall
all of your applications, but you can use the FASTW to restore files and
settings.

Backup all your personal files such as photos and documents to a CD. When
doing a "clean" install of XP all your system files will be reinstalled
including a brand new Registry. All 3rd party programs/apps will also have
to be reinstalled and also SP2 unless you have it included/slipstreamed with
XP. All Updates and
Hotfixes will also need to be reinstalled. Figure on at least one or two days
to do this.
