Backup and reinstall.

I don't want to reinstall "problems" so what should I do to thoroughly check
everything first?
I recollect one of the gurus posting a very comprehensive program of checks,
including spyware and virus scans but I didn't add it to my Favorites.
Please could it be reposted?

Backup Documents and Settings and then do a clean install of windows.
