Backspace won't delete the word

After upgrading to Office 2002 the Backspace key will not
delete a word when it is selected, instead it will just
jump into the beginning of the word.
Is there a setting that would cause a Backspace key not to
delete a word/sentence if it's selected?

Tools | Options | Edit: check the box for "Typing replaces selection"
(backspacing is considered "typing").
