Backspace brings up unwanted menus

I have XP, Home edition, and intermittently, in Word and AOL, hitting the
backspace to delete unwanted text, brings up different menus. I believe they
are generally right click menus. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

does it also do that with the on screen keyboard? there is a keyboard avail
as an accessories in the start menu and can be initiated through the
accessibility folder. open up a doc, then press the onscreen backspace
button by clicking your mouse over it. do you still get problems???
