We are looking for a new tape backup. I am interested in hearing about the
type of format we should look at DAT, DLT... We have a DLT from
benchmark/HP/Dell that never really worked well. I am still trying to get
consitant results out of it. Again, thanks for any comments.

Best regards,

Mike Sumner

Really depends on your budget and how much you need to back up. I have had
great luck with DLT/SDLT, personally - put the devices on a dedicated SCSI
controller if possible, make sure you're using the latest firmware for the
controller & the drive...what problems are you having? Have you tried the
mfr's tape tools? (note you can't have a Dell and an HP at the same time;
even if they both re-badge Benchmark, Quantum, etc.)

The usual error is to fail a write. I have tried Dells diagnostic tool and
it works for short runs upto 7000 32K blocks, after that it will fail the
test inconsistantly. I might get 5 at 10,000 blocks and then fail the next.
I just do not trust unit. I have tried to back up a 4gig sql backup to the
unit and it nearly always fails. I have another Dell server with an internal
4mm tape and it has never failed backing up my web server.

we would spend around a $1000 on a unit.

Is your existing drive still under warranty? Dell might be able to replace
it....
I've had pretty good luck with DLT drives, personally....check with Dell to
see how much an 80/160GB runs...if you can't swing it, try 40/80. I
personally like external drives best (means you don't have to dismantle your
server if your tape drive fails & needs replacing).
