I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 with a CD-RW/DVD and I want to
backup Quicken files when I log off. I have not been able
to do this. The Quicken "Help" says that I
should "configure the CD-ROM drive to work like an
alternate hard drive and to look at the manufacturer's
instructions that came with the CD-ROM drive." There are
no such instructions.

Any suggestions?

XP's rudimentary CD Recording program does not permit backing up data
directly to a CD. You must create a new folder on your hard drive, perform
a backup to that folder, then record the contents of that folder to a CD.

Cannot Back Up Quicken Files to CD
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316415

Open XP's "Help and Support" and type: CD RECORDING , and hit enter.
The click on the topic titled: "Copy Files and Folders to a CD".

Go to intuit.com/support
there is a page Backing up and restoring Quicke date using
a cd-r or cd-rw
kbID# 7096
categories File Management/conversion
you can also try to back up from MY Computer hard drive
You save to the hard drive and then copy the files from
the hard drive

Actually what I do is start my Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Program and click on
applications > Direct CD Format Utility. I then insert a blank CDRW and
click on format CD. This formats the CDRW - takes about 25/30 minutes to
format as I recall. I made 4 since I rotate each week.

After that when in quicken just backup to this CD which in my case is my D
drive..

Hi, Thom.

My solution is much like Dannie's, but I use Nero's InCD rather than Roxio.
Now I use the CD-RW just about like a very large floppy diskette or a very
slow hard drive.

I formatted the CD-RW media before first use. Now, every week, in addition
to my other Quicken backups, I insert the CD into the drive and press
<Ctrl>-B in Quicken, telling it to backup to W:\Quicken. This takes about
20 seconds, compared to just two seconds for a backup of the same file to a
different folder on my HD.

I see a lot of people reporting various problems with using CD-RW (read-only
files, having to backup to HD first and then copying to CD, etc.), but I've
had no hassles at all. It just works. ;<)

A lot of us Quicken users hang out in the Usenet newsgroup
alt.comp.software.financial.quicken. Users there report successes, hassles
and failures with various CD-R/RW hardware/software combinations. If you
have access to Usenet newsgroups, check it out.

Use same method as yourself. Backup to INCD formatted CDRW is the same
apparent time as hard drive folder save. Combined size of all files saved
is around 2MB.

I don't trust Quicken 2003 per Zone Alarm Pro indicates over 3 dozen Quicken
files that may access the internet at any given time. Nor do I trust XPs
external vulnerability. So use Quicken in Win98 with ZA Pro set to ask me
when/if any of Quicken's files attempt access to the internet. If my gut
feeling gets worse on intrusion threat, may just move Quicken to a
standalone PC/no internet. Don't think I'm paranoid, just very cautious
about protecting my financial dealings/records.
