Backing up problem

i posted this recently but haven't seen an answer yet, and I kinda need one.
I saw the same problem posted on 2/11 by Back Nine, with a number of replies,
but none exactly on point. I really hope someone can help:

I have Vista home premium on a brand new HP a1700n machine. I'm trying to
use backup and restore center. I get error message saying the backup was not
completed successfully, parameter is incorrect (Ox80070057), whatever all
that means. I've tried using CD-RW and DVD-R, both to no avail. Can anybody
translate this error message for me and help me get a backup?

This problem becomes more acute since my Restore Points don't work either.
Guy at Circuit City, where I bought the computer, says they seldom do work
and I should just forget about using that, and just do good backups. This
really annoys me. I'm not a real computer-head, just a guy who's trying to
make Vista work, which seems harder and harder every day. Any help out there?

Thanks,
Ron

Ron

Don't know if MS has changed their policy on the backup program or not with
Vista, but earlier versions, Win2k, XP, etc, the backup program could only
write to tape, zip disk, diskette or another harddrive/partition - no
CD-R/CD-RW/DVD-R/DVD-RW was allowed - you needed either a 3rd party
application or backup to harddisk then copy the file (increments) to CD/DVD.

Ron,

Based on your message on 2/11 by Back Nine, I assume that this problem
occured while doing "Backup files".

If this is the case, can you email me the .etl files from
C:\Windows\WindowsBackup\WindowsBackup*.etl?

Thanks,
Ian

Ian,

I did an an advanced, "everywhere" search, and found no files ending in
"etl." I also found no "Windows Backup" folder. This gets weirder and
weirder. What can I do now?

Thanks,
Ron

I am sorry, the path should be
C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsBackup\WindowsBackup*.etl.

In case your windows directory is not on C:, you can type
%windir%\Logs\WindowsBackup from explorer to get to the directory.

Ian,
I've located the files, but I don't know how to e-mail them to you. Don't
have your e-mail address. And should I send them as attachments?
Thank you
Ron

Ron,

"(e-mail address removed)" is the address I use to post here.

My email address is similar, but without "online."

Ron,

This is a bug in the backup application.

For now, the workaround is the following:

1. Run "Windows Backup" [by selecting "Change settings" in "Backup and
Restore Center"]
2. On the right side, click the "Change backup settings" button.
3. Go through the screens keeping all settings the way they are until you
reach the last page.
4. On the last page, check the checkbox with label like "start a new, full
backup"
5. Allow the backup to complete.

Please let me know if it does not work.

Thanks,
Ian
