I need to backup my PC. I'm new to Vista. The backup program in XP seems to
have been replaced by "Backup Status and Configuration" in Vista. I simply
want to run the backups manually myself. I don't see how I can do this with
this program. Also, I'd like to individually select the files to backup. I
don't seem to be able to do this either with this program. Am I looking at
this correctly?

No, you can only Backup locations in the System that contain your files,
such as Documents, Pictures and Music folder for example. You can find this
location in Control Panel > Backup and Restore Center > Create backup copies
of your files and folders.

If you want individually backup specific files, its best you do it manually
by copying each file or group of files to a backup source such as External
drive, or if don't have one, drag and drop the files onto a DVD-RW, CD-RW,
CD-R, DVD-R if you have burning drive installed in your system and use the
built in burning Windows to burn those files.

Google for a free program called Cobian Backup. Clean, neat and free.
