Backing Up AD

What steps do I need to do to backup AD on the Primary and also on the
Secondary DC?

Run ntbackup.exe on each server and backup the 'System State'

And then what exactly do you do to restore? Just restore system state?

I would recommend backing up the system state and the systemroot for the
directory as a minimum. A full backup is always recommended at a periodic
interval as a general rule for backup.

Yep, it's that simple. System State contains the complete AD database as
well as other critical files.
