Backing up a small network

I have recently read up on the Windows XP Pro backup utility and I have three
questions... 1. Can I save the backup to an external hard drive or a tape
drive? I assume the answer would be yes, but I just wanted to make sure. 2.
If I am choose to back up a folder on another computer in my network via my
network places and the computer is not currently on, and therefore not
accessible will that halt the backup or will the back up continue without
that folder...? 3. Is there a noticeable speed difference between backing
up to a tape drive as opposed to an external USB hard drive

Something else to think about: If your backup hard drive is at least the
same size as your total disks to backup, think about using a partitition
image backup. This would allow you to recover when your systems won't
boot. The XP backup utility has an automated system restore capability
that can do this, but regular incremental backups cannot do this.
