backing to external hardrive

I have recently purchased a n external hardrive. I am now trying to back up
everything on my computer using the windows backup facility.Here is what I
have done so far.
Clicked on "my computer"
Right click on "C" drive
Clicked on "properties"
Then "Tools"
Then "Backup now"
The Wizard appears. so far so good.
Clicked next on "backup files and settings
Ticked "All information on this computer" then next.
Then selected my hardrive which is "G" and typed in a tiltle
Then "next" and the wizard gives me a confirmation of what I have set
Then clicked "Finish"
The backup dialogue box appears then straight away another pop up window
appears saying "The file for the recovery disc could not be created.The
operation was aborted"
Can anybody tell me where I am going wrong or what I need to do to correct
this problem"

Hi Paul

Just a thought, but have you enough space on the old drive? It might be
that there is not enough space for the temp files. Try freeing up some
space and try again.

Try to save an ordinary file as G:\Test.txt and see what happens.

You aren't by any chance using the ASR wizard, are you? If so, use the
standard wizard.

I think it's more likely a space problem.
XP's Backup will not compress files so if you have 100 Gig of files to
back up, it's going to require over 100 Gig to store the backup file, plus
some overhead.

To see how much space you need, open My Computer. Note that each drive has
the Free and Used space listed for it. From that you can calculate how much
used space you have. You'll need more than that figure to store the backup
file.

If you can't afford an imaging program, which does compress files, WinZip
still have a freebie version of WinZip you could use to compress all your
files into one large zip file; then use that as your backup file. Just be
sure to check to tell it to save file locations and it'll put all files back
where they came from.
NOTE: This will NOT backup files "in use", which imaging and backup
programs can do. So it's really only good for data, not for the operating
system.

This is the type of behavior you'd see if you're running XP
Home Edition and you have the Backup program start in Wizard
Mode. I believe it's looking to create the floppy disk that's
used in Automated System Recovery. ASR is only available in XP
Pro.

To get around this problem, try the following;
When the Backup or Restore Wizard appears, click on Advanced
Mode. You should see it underlined and in blue on that first
page.
On the Welcome page of the Backup Utility Advanced Mode, click
on the Backup Wizard (Advanced) button.
In Welcome to the Backup Wizard, hit the Next button.
Select "Backup everything on this computer".
Hit the Next button.
Hit the Browse button and select your G drive as the
destination.
Hit Next.
Hit Finish.

Bottom line is that if you have the Backup program configured
to start in Wizard Mode, you'll see that error message.

You might want to consider investing in an imaging program such
as Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost.

Instead of Ntbackup get a copy of Acronis True Image Home, Version 10. This
will do imaging on a drive or partition basis, drive cloning and file
backup. Get it from your favorite software discount seller or look at
Newegg.com.
