Background Weirdness

My wife and I share a PC running Windows XP. We both maintain
different identities so we can configure our personal desktops to our
liking. Last week I changed my background wallpaper to a new image.
For some reason it changed hers to the same image though she wasn't
logged in and I didn't do anything to her settings. Ever since, our
backgrounds have been synced. She changes hers-- mine magically
changes as well. This isn't a large problem on the surface-- I haven't
noticed any other functionality issues. But I'm afraid it may be
indicative of a larger problem.

Any insight?

Hi Joseph:

This situation is likely caused by the "Gay Wallpaper" virus develped by
left-wing hackers in response to the current attempts to ammend the
constitution in order to "... ban so-called "same wallpaper users" from
sharing the same computer".

Wearing a tin foil hat while using your computer will solve this problem and
also protect you and your family from brain wave scanning by the NSA and
Microsoft's WGA program:

The tinfoil didn't work. I tried plastic wrap and wax paper for good
measure. Anybody else have insight?

You need to go get those flypaper strips that you hang from the ceiling and
wrap them around your tinfoil hat. Plastic wrap and waxed paper just don't
do the job.

Sorry the tin foil hat did not work.

I have a few questions:

When you say you are using "... different identities", I assume you mean you
have set up two "User Accounts". Is this correct?

Are both user accounts Administrator?

Are you using "Fast User Switching"? Even though not logged on, was your
wife's User Account running in "standby" in the background (as it does for
fast user switching). In other words, had she been logged on and you used
fast user switching to log on your account or vise versa? Some user settings
leaking through during fast switching?

Honestly it does not sound like an issue serious enough to cause other
problems-- for the computer anyway. You might try setting up another account
for testing how this happened and/or then converting this test account to a
full-fledged version of one of the users. Please check your marriage vows to
see whom should be required to create the new account.

However it could also be the "Divorce Lawyer" worm which seeks to sow
discontent among married persons for the purpose of drumming up business.
Wallpaper custody issues are quite lucrative for family attornies you see.
Tin foil hats are not nearly enough protection for this-- with or without
flypaper. Shark repellant might work.

Good luck : )
