How do I add a background picture which does not tile but
which will fill the whole width of the browser window?

You cannot. Images do not stretch, and when they do, they aren't background
images! 8)

You need to use a background image that is the actual size, or "larger than" the size of the page.

And now for the tough question - how large is the page?

It's a question that you cannot answer without loading the page. At that
point, it's too late to select a corresponding background image.

I did with this with the background image for my logo. It's the background
of a table, and it is 1600 px wide, wider than most screens. I set the table
width to 100 percent, so the viewer will see only as much of the photo as
his screen permits, but the photo does not stretch or shrink. In case
someone has a screen wider than than, I made the right edge of the picture
gradually bleed into the background color of the page so there will not be
an abrupt cutoff. I also saved the photo at a low resolution to make it
load faster, and so far no one has complained that it takes too long.

Wally:

It's about the only way you could do it, but I shudder at the thought of
using so much of my precious 40-45K page weight budget on a 1600px image.

I know what you mean. The image is already 36k. But it's the same logo on
all my pages, so once the reader has downloaded it, it's in the cache and
doesn't have to be downloaded again. And when I started using it, I got
compliments on the new logo and no complaints about longer loading time.

As you say, it's the only way you could do it, so one would just have to
weigh the advantages and disadvantages and see what the viewers prefer, more
images or faster loading.

I use a lot of photos on my site, but the viewers don't seem to mind the
downloading time. In fact, they often ask for more. On the home page,
however, I only use small images except for the logo.
