Is there a way to change the background color from the default blue to
another color? I have a background picture that is only taking up the
middle of the screen and I would like to change it to a gray, similar to
the one of the picture.

I can see how to change the background picture and patterns, but not the
color.

Thanks,

Tom.

Display Properties, Appearance Tab

That worked.

Now is there a place to change to text of the desktop icons. I changed
the background to a grey color, but with the black writing it is hard to
see. And there is no option for it (that I can see) in the Appearance Tab.

Is this possible?

Thanks,

Tom.

I can change the font type, but not the color of the font.

There should be a pull-down/button to the right of the font name at the
bottom of the dialog box. It is where the color of the font is selected. If
it isn't available, try clicking on the various text items in the display at
the top of the dialog box.
