I have a Dell 600m laptop, and somehow I can't seem to remove the background
color that surrounds the icons. I have been trying for a while. When I go
to desktop, there is no option for (none) on the color option drop-down. It
looks very unattractive. My desktop picture (autumn) has an annoying shadow
or color (depending upon the color chosen around them.

Please help.

Thank you.

Not sure if I understand exactly what you're describing but you
might want to try the following:

Right click My Computer and select Properties.
Click the Advanced tab.
In the Performance section, click on Settings.
Make sure there's a check mark next to "Use drop shadows for icon
labels on the desktop".
Click OK twice.
Next, right click an open area on your Desktop and under "Arrange
icons by" remove the check mark next to "Lock Web items on
Desktop".

Here are a couple of articles that may provide more info:

Thanks, the articles that you reference fixed my very annoying problem. I
really appreciate your time.
