Back Up / Restore

My settings are to automatically back up to an external hard disc. there is a
file created on the hard disc, of a significant size, but when I look to
restore, no actual files are displayed, either from the original back-up or
the subsequent incremental back ups.

Can any one help please.

In addition, the backup file on the hard disc only shows creation and last
updated dates as the time I originallycreated the initial back up.

Can you give the exact steps you are using to back up? I am not clear which
backup program you are using to back up and then restore your files.

Can you give me the exact steps you click to start the back up or restore
process? There are two backup programs in Vista--File Backup and Complete PC
Backup. I can't quite tell from your description which you are using to back
up and restore your files. You mention there is a large backup file stored
but you don't mention the name or extension. I need more information to
understand why this isn't working for you.

To originall back up I went into Back up status configuration and selected
back up.
I hit 'Back up now - new files' and then set the option to do a incremental
back up every week.

The files created on my external hard disk are

A file called my computer name and
MediaID.bin

I then went back through Back up Status Configuration and selected the
restore option - advanced restore (to select a file off an external media)

This opended up the file 'computer name' which I selectded and it then
offered me dates that all the back ups were made. Select one and it shows a
new window with files to select for restore, but the windows are empty

Hope this helps

OK, I understand what you're seeing and agree it is confusing. What you need
to do is click Add files... or Add folders... and browse to the
files/folders you want to restore. This browsing will appear similar to
browsing your computer, but you'll only be shown files that are in your
backup.

You can also click Search... to search for the file. So basically you have
to populate the "Select hte the and folders to restore" page with
files/folders to restore.

I hope this helps!

Ahhhhh!!!

Thanks for your help. I understand your explanation. I wanted to check that
this feature all works before I need to use it in anger (hopefully I won't).

Agree that it is not intuitive.

It's always a good idea to test your restores before you need them!

What would you like to see changed on this page to make it more intuitive?
Or, what were you expecting it to look like? I can pass this along to the
Backup team for consideration.

I guess that I was looking for all folders and files that were in a
particular back up to be automatically displayed and then the capability to
select particular files into an empty window and then restore that selected
list.

Hope this helps
