Back-end databases

I am going to be teaching an A-level course next year about the 'digital
economy'. One of the tasks is to investigate a transactional website and then
build the back-end database which might be behind the wesite. it is all very
vague, and pupils will be using Access to develop the database.

Does anyone have any experience of e-commerce sites, and the databases
behind them?

Also does anyone know any large companies (e.g. Boots, WHSmiths, Tescos etc)
with transactional websites, which have their IT team in
Essex/London/Kent/Hertfordshire as it would be very useful for the students
to go on a visit to the IT developers.

Any help much appreciated!

We have been successfully using an Access database on a commercial website
for more than 5 years to display homes in inventory and to display images of
floorplans and elevations.

We use another, on a private intranet to create the contracts and change
orders for hundreds of new homes per year.

Unless the financial transactions were conducted by a 3rd party, I'd be
hesitant to use an Access/JET database to store personal information on the
Internet. While not easily done, its security is not robust enough to
withstand a determined onslaught by hackers.

Thank you - they could mention the security of it in their evaluations. Would
it be possible for me to take a look at your homes website, as they will need
to look at a variety of sites to understand the various potentials for it.
