OK, plse no flames.

I know this has been asked a 1000 times before. A friend wants to buy
one, she's a newbie but wants to fill her cartridges herself. NOT
interested in colour printing. $$$ and ease of re-filling is most
important. What sud she buy?????

BTW, I have experience with Canon 2000/2100 and find them very easy to
re-fill. Plus refill ink in bulk is cheap.

Big thanks CPP Folks.

If no interest in color printing then why inkjet?? Get a laser and
buy inexpensive toner carts.

I'm refilling Epson carts and would not say it is HARD, but it is
non-trivial. I have seen info saying Canon is easier.

Buy a mono laser printer! Similarly priced, much faster printing speeds,
far superior output, cartridges refillable up to four or five times with
bottled toner. Full cartridges can do thousands of A4 printouts compared
to an Epson inkjet's measley few-hundred (300-500?).

Not to mention the head cleaning nightmare attributed to Epson inkjets.

Which model are you referring to Lexmark-wise?

I should have put a few more details. She can't afford a $300 printer
& will do "limited" black printing. She is a NEWBIE.

She was hoping to buy a used printer and if when I am in town I spot a
good "used" LASER then that cud be the 1 I will buy for her.

Thanks for the recs & comments.

There are lasers for less than $200 (e.g. Minolta-QMS 1100, 1250W). On the
other hand, if she wants a cheap inkjet printer ($100 or even less) I
suggest:
1.. HP 5150 or 5160 or 3650, or any 51xx or 34xx or 36xx series model.
2.. Any Lexmark that uses the 10N0016 black cartridge (almost all new
models).

Probably Canon i560/i860/i960/i9xxx series of printers. Anything that uses
BCI-3 or BCI-6 cartridges.

If she is going to do limited black printing, just buy the cheapest inkjet
around. I have a Canon BJC-1000 I picked up for 69.99 a couple years ago
and I only go through 1 black cart every 9 months or so.

If it is just black I'd even venture down to the BCI24 printers.

Tell your firned to go with LASER printer which is cheaper, sharper,
faster, and no ink cartridge to be refilled. If she wants to save more
money then she can refill toner, and she can get a laser printer for under
$100
