I have the choice of d/l Sympatico Security manager and getting rid of AVG
free. But I'm a big "low memory usage" kind of guy and am wondering, how much
of a load (memory- wise) does Security Manager add to my system, and, if thee
are my only two choices for anti-virus scanners, which would you choose?

Neither. Check out Avast at http://www.avast.com/, free.

AVG Free is working well for me. I did not like the Avast interface. I
have not used Sympatico Security.

Stay with local protection, and save yourself the $7 that Sympatico charge
for their service..

the key words there were "these are my only two choices"
which would you choose?

Neither, obviously. I am not in Canada so I can't get Sympatico's
program. I have used the AVG crap and I don't like it.

If you don't like my suggestion, fine, but don't whine about it.

AVG for the fact that to download Sympatico your told to remove any
virus protection and disable your firewall - unless your on a DSL
system this would be a very bad thing to do.

Wow... this alias feller has been giving a lot of rude replies to me... New
guy? I havent seen him in the 2 years Ive been at this newsgroup. Anywho... I
DO have a DSL setup, but my prob. with local antivirus (assuming you mean the
kind that you install from a CD, that has nothing to do with the net), is
that it costs about the same price I'd pay throughout the year with
Sympatico's antivrus. I've GOTTEN sympatico's on my other computer, and Im
deciding whether or not to put it on this one. Liek I said, I'm a low memory
usage kind of guy, and I am wondering, can anyone compare Norton to
Sympatico's Security manager? (ex. which ersion of Norton would I have to get
to have all the scan features of security manager, how much does it cost,
what's the memory consumption difference... etc.)

thanks in advance

Dear Thunderstruck
Newsgroups Customer Services would like to apologise if you feel one of

you deserve.
But then perhaps you have NOT been around in this group as much as you say
you have.
Or you have not had the privilege of that members attention as much as you
should have.
Either way, you have indeed suffered some form of thunder damage.
We will endeavour to communicate with this individual and ensure he pays you

If you are on ANY internet connection without a NAT Router as the
minimum, this would be a bad thing to do.

DSL has nothing to offer for protection, neither does Cable or Dial-up,
the choice of DSL/Cable to offer NAT is not a fixed given across all
installations. Dial-up is the same as Cable/DSL, just lots slower.

If you disable your security on the local computer and are connected
directly to the Interent, you need to have a NAT Router as your first
line/barrier.
