AVG 6.0 won't create the rescue disks

M

Mike

I just tried to create my rescue disks on AVG 6.0 free edition and it
won't work.
I started out with a case of brand new disks and formatted them. Then
I tried to create the rescue disks and it created the first one which
is the bootable one but it ran out of disk space so it said to insert
another disk and click continue. So I did that and it said the rescue
disk could not be created. The only thing on it was something called
Test.txt (i think). But there was nothing in it and was 0kb.

I can't figure out what's wrong. Does anyone know?

Yes I do.

The new *.AVI file that contains the virus definitions is too large to fit
on a floppy. I tried using Win98's DriveSpace utility to compress the floppy
but even that failed. No solutions to hand yet.

A kinda workaround is this:
1) Create the rescue disk on a directory on your Hard Disk. (C:\AVG Rescue
or whatever)
2) Burn a CD with the contents of that directory, or use a Zip drive if you
got one. (Best to us an RW if can manage it. (I don't even have a burner.))
3) Hope that Grisoft will release either a fix for v6.? of their software or
failing that a free v7.

Hope this helps clear up the mistery.

Had a misfire on that last post ;-).

At the site in my sig you can download a self-extracting 1.7 MB blank
floppy image. That should work
for the time being.

Downloaded it but not sure how to use it correctly. It seems to asking me
for a diskette,
formats it. and then what? If I use this formatted diskette I get the same
result as before.

Its just a blank 1.7M floppy. I didn't test it (don't have AVG and the
free download is not available), but several people have said the
problem was just that the DATs got too big for a 1.4 floppy. Maybe
there is more to it than that. Anyway, I have no clue what to suggest
at this point.

I do. F-Prot :)

Would be OK for 9X/ME. For a DOS scanner on 2000/XP I'd want something
else and I wouldn't bother putting it on diskettes anyway. KAVDOS run
per Zvi's method would be OK.

Well, I prefer KAVDOS in any event. Is there a problem running F-Prot
in Safe mode on NTFS (2K/XP) that KAVDOS doesn't have?

Yep. It has that problem of premature termination, sometimes after
just scanning a handful of files. Apparently this doesn't always
happen, but depends of some details of the system being scanned. I
never did follow it up, but I know that KAVDOS scanned NTFS volumes
here that F-PROT wouldn't.

"premature termination" mmmmmmm, I've got an (old) neighbour who's wife
complains of that! :)

i realize f-prot for dos chokes on 2000/xp, but what about fpcmd.exe?
is it not included in the evaluation package of f-prot for windows?

I believe that it is included (haven't looked at the Win version in a
while). Yep, that scanner is a pretty good solution, as it will run
from a Safe Mode command prompt and works fine on all Win32 versions.
