Averaging autofiltered data

Still having trouble averaging autofiltered data. the
correct function appears to be =SUBTOTAL(1, Range). It
however returns #Div/0! when there are no zeros or blanks
in the data column. Excel doesn't appear to recognise any
data in the cells (cells formatted to numbers). The
formula will however work if I manually type values into
the cells (same cell format). Why would Excel not
recognise values in the selected cells after
autofiltering? Any ideas are appreciated.

What you have in the range of interest are items with Text as underlying
format.
You need to change the underlying format. Format|Cells can't do that.
Copy an unused cell, select the range of interest, apply Edit|Paste Special
