Hi all
I presently have Avast Av free home edition and have received an Email
purportedly from Avast notifying me that I need a critical update which I
deleted immediately.
Would anyone know if this is ligit. or a possible ploy.
Thanks for any helpful reply.

It's a ploy. Deleting the email was you practicing sensible computing.
If you want to know if there are updates to Avast!, right click the icon
in the sys tray and choose Updating/Program Update and it will check for
a new version and for new definitions.

Good choice!
I've been using Avast for a couple of years and have never gotten an
update notice by email from them.

Why ask HERE? This group deals with XP and you are asking about some
third party program. Try going to their website or group and ask
there.

IOW,

Ask elsewhere

Either that or ignore net nannies like this anal creep and post wherever
you want. As you may have noticed, and the anal nanny didn't, a lot of
people use Avast here and the sign on the door isn't xp.only but xp.general.

Hi there to the OP. Good question. In reply I have used Avast for about
three years now with complete satisfaction and absolutely no problems.
My grandson now choruses with it "Virus database has been updated". He's
even got the accent down which isn't bad for a Kiwi kid. Anyway, I use
it with XP, and this is a valid question for which the simple answer is
- don't ever respond to an email like that. You used wisdom in deleting
it. Avast can be left to cheerfully update itself without trouble. Hope
this is helpful.

This admonition from someone who almost always posts about Linux.

Your post is rather pathetic and almost comical coming ten hours after
the original post and after four people responded to the OP.

However, it seems to be all that you do...
