Avast antivirus = resource hog ?

I have switched from AVG to Avast a few monthes ago and I was rather
very pleased with this move. Since a few days, it seems that the
recent Avast updates make the program become a real resource hog.

Current avast setting :
- resident protection active and set up to low level

Hardware configuration ;
- P IV - 2 GHz
- 1GB RAM

I have found other sources claiming this antivirus used sometimes a
lot of resources :

Have I missed anything obvious in the settings ?

Since the last program update I keep running only the standard shield
because the other services slowed down email and post retrieval. Let's hope
the next update will be better...

Instead I don't see it eating more resources than before, judging from the
Task Manager.

I am going to do the same here. I will try not to forget to
reactivate the web shield whenever I am using an IE based browser.

Instead I don't see it eating more resources than before, judging
from the Task Manager.

I have some .bat scripts that used to work well and which now
dysfunction because they don't take into account the (quite long)
analysis-time of some files by the antivirus.
