i been having problems with memory of late. i have a total physical memory or
256. i really don't use my computer for very much, games and internet. anyhow
my system is tell me that i have almost all my physical memory used up i
havent seen my avaibale physical memory above 60 in the last week. i can't
find the problem and when i close down programs things freeze up. i don't
know very much about computers so someone please help.

What you're seeing is not a problem. Windows will normally allocate about
256MB even on a system with more than that. As you run and exit programs,
Windows memory management will be paging some memory out to virtual memory
on your hard drive.

Depending on how you're closing down programs, and what you close, you could
be introducing the instability.

A recommendation:.
Get some more RAM - for general purpose use 512MB is the best recommendation

Ok, the other comments about how 256mb is a little low are correct, but
ignore the fact that you seem to have been managing just fine with it up
until recently. The amount of memory installed is therefore probably not
your biggest problem. That figure for available memory is probably the
figure that you've always had - Windows tries to use all your memory for
something or other, and diverts it for use in different places as needed...
aside from a small reserve amount perhaps, unused memory is wasted memory.

These freezes - do you remember making any changes to your system round the
time they started happening, and can you describe what kind of programs
you're trying to close down and how you are trying to close them when you
experience the freeze?

What does this freeze look like - does the entire system sit there doing
absolutely nothing at all, or does it run incredibly slowly, or what? Do you
get garbage appear on the screen?

Have you ran a scan with up to date antivirus and anti spyware tools?

I'm always surprised at "professionals" who STILL have to be asked "Have you
checked (event viewer / syslog)".

its been freezing up when i load a game like i play the sims and hunting
games and they get to the start screen and thats where they stop, and then
it will freeze or my cd-rom won't auto run. i can ctrl+alt+del, but sometimes
it still wont shut down the program, and when it does that, then everything
freezes and i can't do anything. i have made no changes and i have ran three
different scans and found nothing. these games have all worked on this
machine in the past with no problem.

Ok... games freezing on the start screen.

You might have already tried this but, I'd start by finding the latest
version of your video card drivers on the manufacturer's website and
downloading those. It may be that your computer has installed a Windows
update to a component called "DirectX" which controls how games talk to the
system, and when this is updated it is a good idea to update the video card
drivers as well.

as far as i know every thing is up to date, i really wouldn't know what
manufacturer made any of the parts. all the stuff should be good i just had
it rebuild a few months ago. DirectX is all good all drivers are updated. its
just odd one day it fine the next i have 17mb physical memory with out
running anything
