Autoupdate won't run

My autoupdate will not run, either automatically or manually. I get the
following message:
Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software...

But then it stops. The Install Update, View Installation History and
Restore options are all grayed out. It doesn't matter if I initiate the
update on my computer via Control Panel, IE or on the MS website.

MS suggests that Zone Alarm is installed and to turn it off. Well, Zone
ALarm WAS previously installed on this computer, but has been uninstalled. I
also searched the registery and deleted keys that I could find associated
with Zone Alarm. There are no more ZA files on my computer, BUT I still have
this problem.

I have also searched this board and tried the following:
Turned on BITS
Visited: http://snipurl.com/bpb5 and deleted CatRoot2

Because I still could not get AU to work properly, I installed SP2 from CD.
Now the Security Center is indicating that my Auto Update is not turned on
and when I select the Turn On Auto Update option, the Security Center
indicates it could not change my settings and I have to do it manually. When
I check the Control Panel/Auto Update page, it shows I have Auto Update
configured to occur daily at 4:00pm. So now, I'm completely puzzled and AU
STILL doesn't work!

Any ideas???

Do the following:-
Remove Controls:
Start>Run Type in 'regsvr32 iuctl.dll /u' (without the quotes>OK.
You should get a successful message, click OK
Now search for IUCTL.DLLfiles, look in C:\
Delete every copy of this file that you find.
Run the search again for the file IUENGINE.DLL.And do the same i.e.
delete every copy it.

Delete Windows Update files:
Open My Computer> Open the C drive>Program Files folder>Open the Windows
Update folder.
Delete everything in the folder except the V4 folder.
Now open the V4 folder, if it exists.Delete everything in the folder
except the iuhist.xml file

Now visit WindowsUpdate site and you will be prompted to reinstall
the V4 site controls.

Thank you for your suggestion, but it didn't seem to help.
I received the error that the Module iuctl.dll could not be found. I went
ahead and
searched for the file and it was not found. I proceeded with the
IUENGINE.DLL search and delted 3 instances. There was nothing but the V4
folder in the Windows Update file. I then deleted everything but the
iuhist.xml file. When I revisited the Window Update site, I still had the
same problem. I hate to resort to this, but I will probably just save what I
have to and reformat, reinstall!

Any other ideas?
