AutoUpdate Function Has Changed

B

Bruce

Hi,

I rebooted my machine for the first time in a few day (to reset modem,
router), and both the AutoUpdate in my sytem tray, and the Windows Update
site I get to via IE, have changed their appearance and the way they
work.

The AutoUpdate in my system tray:

I had AutoUpdate set to download critical updates and let me decide when
(or if) to install. Whenever the AutoUpdate popped up, I'd click it, it
would say I have an update, I'd click details, and it would show me what
the update was. I'd then decide if I wanted to install it. Since I had
it set for critical updates, I'd always go ahead and install whatever was
automatically downloaded.

Now, when AutoUpdate pops up, I click it open, and my choices are Express
Install, which is selected by default, and Advanced Install. There are
no details as to what's been downloaded. If I click Advanced Install,
I'm shown the details of all updates, not just critical ones. I am not
able to set this to Advanced Install so that it stays there.

The Windows Update Site:

Also, if I go to the Microsoft Windows Update site through IE, the site
is different. There is no longer a Scan for updates button. It scans
automatically, and if any updates are found, I'm presented with Express
and Advanced Install. And, there's a category I've never seen before:
High Priority.

I went to my AutoUpdate configuration on my system, and there's no longer
a setting for downloading critical updates only.

Did Microsoft push a Windows Update software revision out to it's users?

Sincerely,
Bruce

Long explanation, short answer:

Yes.
