Autonumber is a "Blank"

Another Programmer, I haven't met, has told me, that, on
2 occasions, a new record was inserted, but the PK field, an Autonumber,
came up as nothing - a Blank.

He wound-up deleting the particular record, & inserted another Record...
which resulted in an Autonumber.

Has anyone encountered this...& the possible cause?

I believe that zero is a valid autonumber, but I don't think null is.
Somehow I don't think you can have a blank in a number field, but then ... I
don't know.
