Automation of Filename and Path in Footer

Vanessa

I am wondering if there is a way for Word 2003 to
automatically update the filename and path at the bottom
of a document when you save it as a different name. I
work at a law firm where we prepare several real estate
contracts for different units. We constantly use the
same forms over and over again, and Word 2000 used to
change the footer for us when we would save it again for
a different unit. Is there a setting we need to activate
for this to happen, or do we need to change the footer
manually each time? Help!

Although it won't update automatically, it will update when you print, and
that is what counts. Updating applies to fields anywhere in the document
provided you have "Update fields" checked on the Print tab of Tools |
Options. Fields in the header/footer update when you print even if you don't
have that option enabled.

Hi Vanessa,

The other replies to your post assume you've got a FILENAME field in your
footer rather than a typed filename. If you've got a typed filename, replace
it with a FILENAME field for a semi-automatic update. To do this, press
Ctrl-F9 to create an empty field '{ }', then type 'FILENAME' or 'FILENAME
\p' between the field braces, so that you get:
{FILENAME} or {FILENAME \p}.

{FILENAME} gives just the filename, while
{FILENAME \p} gives the filename and path.

Cheers
