Automatic Windows Update

Hello Microsoft Tech Support.

I bought a Compaq Presario.
Computer Model No: S5000NX, S/N: M3370GW
Window XP OEM product key is K7V4Q-HFBPQ-PXXBB-QHJYW-FKJ6J

I started the system yesterday things went well. I connected the system to
Internet and started getting automatic updates. All updates went well. I
started my computer today the system came on well. Then I installed Compaq
Software and Reference Library software CD. System automatically rebooted.
After that the system kept rebooting and Windows never came up successfully.
I called Compaq tech support they told me that Windows Automatic Update
corrupted the registry. So they asked me to use the recovery option. The
tech support also advised me
to disable Automatic Window Update feature and never to update my system
unless the update comes from HP?

Does Automatic Windows Update Corrupt Registry?

Please advice.

Thanks,
JM

Jay;
That is very bad and dangerous advice to not update the computer.
Compaq does not furnish the necessary updates.

Call back for a second opinion about whether to update.
If the tech says the same thing, ask for a reference, something so
drastic will have a reputable reference on their website somewhere.
If the tech can not give you a reference, ask for a supervisor and
complain about the dangerous advice given by the incompetent tech.

Sometimes something goes wrong with an update, Automatic or otherwise.
You should still install the necessary updates.

You should install ALL Critical Updates
Install the Recommended Updates after you determine it applies to you.
You are better off getting drivers from the manufacturer.

Also NEVER post your Product Key unless you are in the habit of giving
away $200 to strangers as they walk past.

Be even worse if he hasn't activated his installation before posting that
key. Someone ELSE could then try to activate with that key and literally
steal his purchase from him. Remember this, kids!

Same post was sent 'yesterday', told the OP about the key but OP just does
it again.
Ah-well, one licence-key lost in exchange for a load of spam (some deal).

Thank you all. Something I learnt today. Fortunately my product was
already registered before I posted the question. From now I will not do the
mistake. Thanks for your advice.
