automatic updates!!!

about 2 weeks ago this started - updates are downloaded and ready to be
installed, instal now or later, I clicked on 'install now' performed the
install, restarted. when I restart does the same thing-same updates!! at
first I thought the original updates didn't install properly
and just re-installed them, but whenever I start up/log on it keeps doing
the same thing-and the same updates plus some newer ones, I even tried to
download and install them manually but it continues to do this. I do have
better things to do besides constantly installing these things. is there a
way to install these updates once and for all?
