Something similar happens with me, but on a less dramatic scale with and
only withVista U, not HB HP or B. The installer updates *itself* first and
is supposed to automatically restart. Here I find there's a temporary glitch
in that the U version doesn't do that for me and I have to re-access the
Windows Update applet and get it going again. But it's never been more than
a few minutes.

I know it sounds corny and it's only an operating system, but these issues
are getting resolved. SP1, in particular, should solve many issues
(although, no doubt it, will cause the odd one to the glee of the linux and
apple fanbois). But overall, Vista is heading quickly to where XP is now
i.e. relatively stable across the board.

Don't. This is as it's been for years. Every new client OS from Microsoft
has teething problems the first year. XP was just like this when it came
out. 2000 Professional had issues and so on [with 2000, people at first were
saying the Beta 3 was better than the RTM .. but that changed soon enough].

There are a lot of software/hardware permutations and combinations out there
and it takes a while for things to settle down. That, plus all the run of
the mill issues that people are always having cause the commotion, but
things will settle down soon enough - probably especially with the release
of the upcoming service pack.

As for the updating. I'm sorry, but that is the computing world. Every
single modern operating system out there needs updates on an ongoing basis -
that's just reality when there are so many criminals out there ready to take
advantage of any known vulnerability. Microsoft has a setting so they can be
done automatically, so most people will hardly notice them.
