Thank you in advance for any input regardng my question.

I am running XP Home Edition with DSL internet access.
My computer is set up for Automatic Update to download
but not install updates. I am waiting for SP2 to
download via automatic update.

What began happening 2 days ago is that the Automatic
Update icon is sitting idle in the system tray. When I
hover the mouse over it, the balloon shows "Downloading
updates: 0%". It has been unchanged that way for 2
days. Is this the normal behavior prior to AU
downloading SP2? In Task Manager, CPU usage is 00
for "wuauclt.exe".

I went to the Windows Update web site and scanned for
updates. The only one it found was SP2. The problem was
that the only option it offered was to download AND
install. There wasn't any download only option. I
didn't download it because I want to backup the computer
first (I do anyhow) and find out what problems I can
expect with Norton antivirus and firewall before
installing SP2.

Thanks again.

visit windows update site
[http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us]and
click the Express Install, during installation it will create a System
Restore point,so don't worry.Still if you have any doubt then you may
easily back up yur important files either in different partition or on CDs.
please go through the articles regarding xp sp2 here prior to installation:-
