automatic update on my schedule

I recall that Windows Update used to allow me to download the updates when
notified, and then let me install them right then instead of waiting until a
specified time. I've looked through the KB, and find references to that
behavior, but none of the options I have available allow that action. Am I
doing something wrong, is the KB info outdated, or is there some other issue.
Thanks.

In Start, Control Panel, Automatic Updates I have Automatic not
checked and have checked "Notify me but don't automatically download
or install". When notified I always commence the process by selecting
Start, Help and Support, Keep your computer up-to-date with Windows
Update and opt for a Custom install.

That's the way I've done it (or just through Start/Windows Update) the last
few times, but I'm sure at one time it did everything from icons in the tray.
Maybe senior moments are creeping up on me. Thanks for your help.

David, if you use Gerry's method to receive notification of available
updates, you should get a yellow shield icon in the system tray (lower right
corner of your screen) when new updates are available from Microsoft. Just
click on this icon to start the update process. (Works for me every month on
"Update Tuesday.)

That's the way I used to do it. I'd click the shield, automatic update
would download the updates, and then ask me then if I wanted to install them
right away. Now it will download them, but it never comes back, and it wants
to wait until 3a.m. (I haven't changed the default) to install them.

I know I can change the default time for installation, and I can keep going
through Windows Update, but it sure used to be simpler.

Select Start, Control Panel, Automatic Updates. Verify that "Notify me
but don't automatically download or install" has been selected. From
what you are saying it seems that another option "Download updates for
me but let me choose when to install them " has been selected!

That's the option I have selected, and it's the only option I've every had
selected. I don't recall when the behavior changed, but I suspect it was
from an update, or perhaps an unrelated download.

I can download when I choose, I just can't install when I choose.
