automatic styles

Word 2003 creates a new style every time I make a formatting change to a
single instance of the style. I checked under Tool - Autoformat as you type
- Define styles based on your formatting and that is unchecked. Does this
really turn this monster off?
 
You want to make sure that under Tools, Options, Edit "Keep track of
formatting" is not selected.
