automatic section title numbering

Hi,

I am writing a book that has over 270 seperately titled sections, seperated by page breaks, that I would like to automatically number now, after the fact, so that if I do any more editing or rearranging the correct numbering is maintained. They are currently at the the Heading 2 outline level ... and are centered and underlined.

I tried outline numbering but I couldn't get it to work predictably ... for some reason. ... possibly because of inevitable format changes and differences among the numberous sources I drew much of the text from.

I've already managed to use the automatic TOC generating feature with the same section titles and it worked well ... if that helps in some way.

Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

However, do you have 270 manual page breaks in your doc? You should start
each section with a Heading that is formatted to have "page break before".
