Automatic restarting online - for Alex Nicholl MS Mvp

Aitch

I posted a question recently and you replied - as below.
As it is now back on page 36 of this NG I can see no way
of bringing it to your further notice other than this
type of reposting - except by contacting you direct which
I am reluctant to do.
Something new happened today. I was online and a caption appeared on screen.
I didn't catch it all but it was headed Network Connection. It was giving a
countdown in seconds to what seemed to be an automatic re-connection after a
cut-off.

I would make sure that this is not in fact an effect of
the blast worm
having got in: Go to
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_qr.htm#rpc
and get the VBS Script file to check the matter out and
fix it if
necessary. It will also link to the patch you need from
Microsoft to
guard against it.

And first make sure that you have the firewall enabled -
in Network
connections, r-click the connection you dial, Properties -
Advanced page

I did what you suggested. No, the test showed I am clear
and the virus is not the cause. I would welcome any more
suggestions you might have to make.

I am, of course, very grateful for your help on the
matter. Incidentally it happened again today. Another
puzzling factor is that my online connection stayed
open, even though the redialling began - I think I was on
to a newsgroup at the time through Outlook Express. I did
see the phrase autodialling shown in the on-screen
caption. Linked or not I don't know, but I am waiting a
reply from Virgin (my ISP) to my complaint about being
online and at the same time finding my server failing and
e-mails not getting out.

Thanks again and regards,

H (another resident in Dorset)
For the record I use XP Home, OE v6 and Zone Alarm.

Hi, Aitch!

The NNTP servers which both Alex and I use to access the MS newsgroups have
been out of whack since Thursday, 25 Sept-03. Allow me to step in here...

Rule out hijackware:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

These days most of us are recommending HijackThis: Post your files to the
forum mentioned on the above page. Some of these bad guys have started
blocking users access to AdAware's and other's pages! (More at
http://www.spywareinfo.net/sep16,2003)

If you cannot access the page to download HijackThis, use this link:
http://216.180.252.218/~spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/hijackthis.zip

If you find you need CoolWebSearch Shredder, use this link:
http://216.180.252.218/~spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/cwshredder.zip
(27 Sept-03: 1.21 is the latest version. Get a fresh copy of CWS Shredder
before each use.)
