Automatic par. number inside a bookmark?

Our publications have 20-30 pages and each paragraph
number (manual) is included inside a bookmark. The text
contains many cross-references to these paragraph numbers.

When we add and delete paragraphs, we renumber all the
paragraphs by hand. Is there a way that we can use the
automatic paragraph numbering and have that reference
included inside a bookmark?

Hi Carole,

If you use automatic paragraph numbering, you don't need
bookmarks. Click Insert-> Cross-Reference. In the left
hand dropdown box, choose Numbered Item, and in the right
hand box, choose Paragraph Number. The references will
update automatically when the file is opened or printed
(or you can force a manual update by selecting any of the
cross-ref fields (or the whole document) and pressing F9.

Unfortunately this works only if you use Word's built-in
autonumbering for the paragraphs but not if you want to
use {SEQ} fields instead, which as I recall are generally
more stable. You could, however, use SEQ fields and just
bookmark those you want to cross-reference, then in the
Insert Cross-Ref dialog select 'Bookmark' and 'Bookmark
Text' in lieu of what I described above.

In either case your cross-references will update without
all the tedium of doing it manually. As you probably know,
using bookmarks means you must be a bit more careful so
that you don't trash the bookmarks themselves while editing

Hi Mark,

I tried the method you described in your first paragraph
but the cross-references do not get updated when I add a
paragraph which causes all subsequent paragraph to get
renumbered.

Carole,

They won't update on the fly, but they should update when
you save and reopen the doc, or when you select one or more
of them and press F9.

Press ALT+F9 with one of the cross-ref fields in view on
the screen. What does it say?
