Automatic Metric

Hello,

Does anyone know if the automatic metric checking is done only when XP
is started or a nic is activated/deactivated or if it is something that
is periodically rechecked as XP is running? I am curious as to whether
it is possible on a machine with a wired and wireless nic if IP traffic
shifts back and forth between the two as the wireless signal waxes and
wanes. If I look at the network connections window will the nic with
the highest metric have the red 'x' on its icon and say 'not
connected'? Thanks.

XP checks the metrics of the connected network adapters every time a
program sends or receives data on the network. If an adapter has a
red 'x', it's not connected, so XP won't use it.
