I have an xp pro pc that is a member of a domain but i would like the pc
when switched on to automatically logon locally with a local account rather
than on to the domain. Does anybody know how to do this.

Thanks in advance

The Microsoft "TweakUI" allows you to login automatically to a username but
I've never used it with pro, just home.

Right-click "My Computer"
Select "Properties" from drop-down menu
Click "Computer Name" tab
Click "Change" button
In the "Member of" section, Deselect the "Domain" radio button.
Click the "OK" button to apply

If the OP does what you suggest Og, he will disjoin his computer from
the domain entirely. I'm not sure that's what he really wants to do. I
think he wants to have the ability to log on automatically to the local
user account instead of having to use the drop-down arrow to choose
between the domain and local logons. I don't think you can do this on a
computer that is a member of a domain, but I'm not sure.

However, I *am* sure that if he changes the status of his computer from
domain to Workgroup he'll lose all ability to log onto the domain (and
any accounts). If this is a computer that is no longer used on the
domain, that will be fine as long as he knows the local Administrator
password (or can get into it with NTpasswd for ex.).
