automatic internet time syncronization

Josh

automatic internet time syncronization on my win-xp pro used to work very
well using a modem connection over the phone line.
recently I started using a WLAN wireless network connection (peer-to-peer)
(IEEE 802.11b) connected to another computer running on win2000 which is the
one connected to the internet (using an SMC EZ Card 10_100 (SMC1211TX). and
I get the following message: "An error occurred while Windows was
syncronizing with [name of server]". I tried other servers, and at different
times of the day and night, and the same happens.
or sometimes the message appears: "Windows has never attempted to syncronize
with an internet time server".

this is the complete list of time servers on my machine:
time.windows.com; time.nist.gov; time-a.nist.gov; time-b.nist.gov;
time-a.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov; time-b.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov;
time-c.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov; time.nist.gov; time-nw.nist.gov

I mean, is it possible that ALL 9 servers are down at the same time? (my
machine is connected to the net for 9 hours uninterrupted every day).

My firewall is off, which is quite risky.

would appreciate some assistance.

Josh,

Can you successfully synch from the Win2000 computer when you can't from the
WinXP computer?

The wireless media, which is half duplex, is not a good media for gaming because
of high latency. I'd bet the same will be true for time synchronisation.

Please re enable your firewall, and get time synch working on the Win2000
computer thru the firewall. Then try to get it working on the WinXP computer.

NTP Time Synchronisation is a two way process, and is highly dependent upon a
stable and symmetrical path between the time server and the client computer.
I'd bet that the half duplex wireless LAN is going to be a challenge.

Do a Yahoo search. You may find some educating articles:

thanks for the advise, Chuck, I had no idea about the seriousness of e-mail
address munching.

now a question before i do anything else, how do i time synch the Win2000
computer if it doesn't have an "internet time" tab on the 'date & time
properties' window? do i have to install 1st a special software to do this?

Josh,

Win2000 does do time synchronisation from external sources. Setting up the
synchronisation does not use a nice gui interface, you have to run a series of
command line procedures. One additional drawback is that the time synch client
only supports one synch source, so it should be a reliable one.

There are an unlimited number of free third party applications that will do this
also, and more. Any search engine, or freeware / shareware library, will offer
you applications to do time synch, with other time and date utilities.
