Set up small network with 2x Xp pro machines.
Primary has got modem, secondary uses that modem through a
network share. On primary machine, IE connection properties
is set to Never dial a connection. When you switch on the
second machines it connects to the internet automatically
and you can't change the setting on that machine because
that part is greyed out.

How can I stop it from connecting automatically?

Make sure you don't have any apps starting up with the second machine that
require a connection to the internet. The "never dial a connection" setting
on the first machine applies only to apps running locally. If your first
machine receives a connect request from another, it is forced to open the
default internet connection.
