Autofit rows - excess space above text in rows

With Long text in a cell in row set to 'Autofit': some times Excel adds extra space above the text in the cell with longest text. I have verified no extra alt-tab in cell before long text. I have manually set row height to 1 then re-applied autofit and extra space still exists???????

I've never been able to make sure that it always works.

I like to adjust the columnwidths slightly, then autofit the row. But if I
change the data in those cells, I have to do it again.

I've given up and accepted the fact that excel makes a poor word processor. And
I've come to embrace the eccentricities of excel <vbg>.
