Autocorrect functionality still missing in Outlook 2007 & Word 200

I've read previous posts regarding "missing" Autotext functionality in
Outlook & Word 2007.

I use Autocorrect (not Autotext) because my list of entries is long, in
addition to each entry being many paragraphs. It's just a lot easier than
Autotext for what I do, but I absolutely need the SAME Autocorrect
functionality in both Word and Outlook.

In Word 2007, I tried loading my old normal.dot template, and although it
did "load" my autocorrect entries did not resurrect. (This process
supposedly reloads your Autotext entries into building blocks under Quick
Parts, but since I don't use Autotext entries, I can't say...)

This is a BIG problem for me. If I have to recreate the Autocorrect entries
in Word 2007, I guess I can live with that.

But, in Outlook 2007, having to select from a huge drop-down list with Quick
Parts in Outlook will be extremely cumbersome for me. Cumbersome enough that
I will not upgrade to Office 2007 at all.

I don't want to have to maintain 2 complete sets of autocorrect entries --
one that would be for Word 2007 under normal.dotm and my original normal.dot
for my older version of Outlook. Then again, if I used Word as my default
editor in my older version of Outlook, which version of Word would get
loaded? I don't even know if that's feasible...)

I guess this difference has something to do with the fact that you can no
longer select Word as your default email editor in Outlook? Hey, Developer
guys, did we forget to "hook up" Word and Outlook??? 2007 is supposed to be
the epitomy of integration, after all.

The last posts I could find on this subject were several months old.
Someone PLEASE tell me that Microsoft is going to re-integrate Word and
Outlook in this very basic (and for me VERY necessary) way!

Additionally, how can I import my Autocorrect entries without having to
re-enter them? (BTW, I am aware of the old "support.dot" that allows you to
export your existing autocorrect entries. However, it is a known bug that
each time you have a paragraph break in any single autocorrect entry, the app
creates a new record for each paragraph, and the whole file gets messed up.
It's easier for me to re-create them than to try and clean up the entire file
and attempt to re-import...)

Other than that, I love everything else about Office 2007!

You can't use Word 2007 as email editor for Outlook 2003 or older.

That is great, so I just must have a setup issue...
I can't seem to access Autocorrect functionality at all in a new email in
Outlook. I just downloaded Office professional 2007 the other day. Is there
some add in or something I have to select to get that back?

Good Morning, Ben.

When I open an email in Outlook (which is supposedly "using a stripped down
version of Word" as its default email editor) I can not: a.) get autocorrect
to work, NOR b.) make any autocorrect edits.

To test this, open word and create an autocorrect (not autotext) entry, like
"roi" to be replaced with "return on investment" for example. It will work
fine in Word.

Then close Word and open Outlook 2007. Create a new email, and then type in
your autocorrect entry, "roi", in the body of the email, and it doesn't get
replaced with the corrected text.

Further, there is no way to access the autocorrect tab at all! It is just
not there. Try to add it to the menu -- it's not available for you to select
anywhere.

I really like Office Pro 2007 so far, but this is, unfortunately, would be a
deal breaker for me, as I have many, very long, autocorrect entries. From
what I've read, many companies use autocorrect in the same manner I do.

I answer potential customers with both written letters and emails every day,
as many as 100 per day. Depending on what activities our guests want to do
on their vacations, I have different autocorrect entries that describe these
activities, so in each correspondence, whether in email or in a written
letter, I use multiple autocorrect entries per correspondence.

"Quick Parts" (which is in Outlook 2007) is never going to get it for me,
unfortunately. Having to repeatedly select from a drop-down list of 150
entries or so is ridiculous, and would be extremely cumbersome for me.

I am hoping that I just have some kind of setup issue, or need some upgrade,
or this latest version accidentally left it out and it's coming back, or
something like that!

Yeah!

Mere mortals may have trouble navigating to it, but OK, that is progress! I
am happy it's there!!!

But, the autocorrect entries I made in Word are not there, which is why it
didn't seem to be working. But at least I can create new ones!

So, if I understand this correctly, what you are showing me is that there
are now TWO autocorrect files. One that "lives" in normal.dotm and works for
Word, and one that resides in normalemail.dotm and works for the stripped
down version of Word that loads in Outlook. Is that pretty much it?

If so, are there any suggestions for keeping them synchronized? (It might
be nice to have some kind of way to combine them.)

One more question -- When I try to add the Autocorrect replace screen as a
shortcut on my quick access toolbar, it doesn't seem to be available for
selection. As much as I use it, it would be nice to get it on the toolbar.
Can you figure this out? It doesn't seem to be available for selection when
you try to customize the toolbar in a new email.

Hey, Ben -- guess what???
The shortcut for Autocorrect IS available for addition to the quick access
toolbar. It's called "AutoManager" (who knows why they didn't call it
autocorrect?)

I was looking again, and wondered what that heck that was, and to my
surprise, my autocorrect screen came up!

So, anyway, no need to make a suggestion for adding it...

Hi, Patrick!

Yes, renaming normal.dotm to normalemail.dotm seems to work. So far so
good, no problems, and as you expected, my autocorrect entries are there.

ALSO, I found the shortcut for the Autocorrect replace screen in the menu
for the Quick Access Toolbar. It's just called "AutoManager", which is why
none of us could find it, I guess.

All said, this makes me very happy!

So, if I understand this correctly, what you are showing me is that there
are now TWO autocorrect files. One that "lives" in normal.dotm and works for
Word, and one that resides in normalemail.dotm and works for the stripped
down version of Word that loads in Outlook. Is that pretty much it? Yes.

If so, are there any suggestions for keeping them synchronized? (It might
be nice to have some kind of way to combine them.)

What happens if you rename NormalEmail.dotm into something else, then
copy Normal.dotm and name the copy NormalEmail.dotm? I don't know what
it'll do to the default format of your emails, but I'd think this copies
your AutoCorrect entries from Word into Outlook. If it doesn't mess up
the default format of your emails, you could write a batch file that
does this automatically for you, even write it so that it runs before
opening Outlook...Of course, you could only edit the entries then in
Word.

Then close Word and open Outlook 2007. Create a new email, and then
type in
your autocorrect entry, "roi", in the body of the email, and it doesn't get
replaced with the corrected text.
Of course that won't work. Word 2007 saves the AutoCorrect entry in the
file Normal.dotm, while Outlook 2007 looks in NormalEmail.dotm. So you
saved the change in one file, but not in the one that Outlook looks in.

Further, there is no way to access the autocorrect tab at all! It is just
not there. Try to add it to the menu -- it's not available for you to select
anywhere.
Start a new email. Office button menu, Editor Options, Proofing,
AutoCorrect Options, AutoCorrect?
