AutoCorrect Dialog Box Tabs

What is the difference between the AutoFormat and Autoformat as You Type Tabs in the autocorrect dialog box. What do they do differnetly? AutoFormat check boxes don't seem to do anything. When and how are they used?
 
AutoFormat only takes effect when you manually run AutoFormat from the Tools
menu, while AF as you Type takes effect immediately as you type.
