Whenever I close Outlook (2002) and reopen it, as I type email addresses,
Outlook does not autocomplete it until after I type in their full email
address and send a message to that person. Then it works until I close it
again. It just started doing this 2 months ago after working correctly for
over a year. Any ideas? I didn't change anything or load anything. Thanks!

You can try resetting it by disabling the feature and restart Outlook. Then
enable it again. If this doesn't work you can try a hard reset by renaming
your nk2-file to .old when Outlook is closed. If that doesn't work you've
got a corrupted mail profile which needs to be recreated. For detailed
instructions on that see;

Great! But two questions: Where do I find my nk2-file ( I searched, but
didn't find one) and will the other fix you mention below (recreating a mail
profile) erase all of my inboxes?
Thanks!

Open Windows Explorer and type the following in the Address field:

%AppData%\Microsoft\Outlook

Click Go. You'll see it there. The C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Application Data folder (where %appdata% points) is a
hidden folder. Its name will match your mail profile name and it will be an
"Office Data File".
and will the other fix you mention below

Not if you follow the instructions.

If you upgraded from OL2000 to OLXP or 2003, it is possible (though not
probable) that you do NOT have an NK2 file. In some instances we have found
users with an autocomplete file extension of Nick. It is NOT the old
Nickname file that OL used, but rather their newer iteration known as the
NK2 file.

You should probably fix this little oddity of file naming. You'll find a
link on how to fix this issue at www.ingressor.com/faq.htm.

Once properly renamed to NK2 things may work better for you.

Renaming the NICK file probably won't help. This is a well documented
problem with the only known solution here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;287854
Obviously, creating a new profile accomplishes the same thing and is the
preferred solution. For that matter, anyone ever attempting to upgrade an
Outlook version should always start over with a new profile first thing.
Outlook was not designed to withstand upgrades despite Microsoft's claims to
the contrary.

So is this also a problem when there was no upgrade? This computer has always
had Office XP (2002).

There are plenty of other causes for a corrupt profile. Creating a new one
is the solution for you as well.
